FlipFlop Jewelry
Recycling is totally hip! These jewelry are made from old plastic shoes and slippers.
On this page we will tell you everything about the flip-flop jewelry!
Do you also contribute a bit of sustainability?

Who makes the FlipFlop jewelry?
The Bozo people of Mali live off fishing along the Niger River. When fishing declined, the fishermen's wives experimented with washed-up flip-flops. They discovered that you can make really fun and trendy jewelry with them.
Meanwhile, many families are able to provide for their livelihood by making these jewelry.

The production process
The women collect stray flip-flops and receive manufacturing errors from a local factory.
Step 1: The flip-flops are acquired, then thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
Step 2: The usable parts of the flip-flop are cut into pieces and attached to a long awl for melting around it.
Step 3: The long thin strands are further processed with another melted thread of the same or a different color.
Step 4: The strands are cut into pieces and melted together in the correct way to form trendy jewelry.
Step 5: The jewelry cools down and is now ready for sale.

Climate impact with recycled jewelry
Every year, 200,000,000 (200 million) pairs of flip-flops are thrown away, often ending up in nature in various African countries (source: Rahmania, 2024 ) . As is obvious, this is very bad for local nature, flora and fauna and the living environment for people.
The Bozo women's cooperative ensures that these materials are reused and given a second life. In doing so, they also clean up their own living environment.
